About this book
Finger-ring lore carries the subtitle Historical, Legendary, Anecdotal and promises numerous illustrations. William Jones, F.S.A., explains in his preface that he meant to write only about ring superstitions, but found so much of interest in rings generally that he gave the book a more varied character. It was printed in London in 1877.
One passage describes a Roman ring found at Pierse Bridge, in the county of Durham, engraved with two human heads, and notes that medieval seals of this kind often carry the motto Love me, and I thee. Another mentions a ring in the Louvre with a lion sculptured by a Greek artist, and a gold ring with a bearded mask. A passage on gemmel rings quotes Herrick and describes a silver ring found in Dorsetshire whose legend, Ave Mari, becomes legible only when its two halves are brought together. The index has entries for wedding-rings.
