About this book
Elizabeth Haig's book is about flowers as symbols in religious pictures. Section titles in the sampled pages include The Lily, The Flowers of the Virgin and The Flower Symbolists. The section on the lily begins with Gioacchino di Fiore dividing the life of humanity into three periods, under the Father, the Son and the Spirit.
Another passage says that before the eleventh century the lily is not found in pictures of the Virgin, that there are no lilies in the Catacombs, and that in 1043 Garcias of Navarre founded the Order of the Lily of Navarre. Another section gathers comparisons of the Virgin to flowers, including Saint Bernard's “the violet of humility, the lily of chastity and the rose of charity”. A further passage explains that the sword and lily in a Last Judgment stand for the Judge, the rose and lily in an Assumption for the love and purity of the Madonna, and the palm for triumph.
