About this book
Parish Life in Mediæval England is a book by Francis Aidan Gasquet. A chapter called The Parish Church gives Bishop Hobhouse's description of a parish as the community dwelling in an area defined by the Church, organised for Church purposes, and subject to Church authority. The text calls the church the centre of every mediæval parish.
The text quotes an entry in the churchwardens' book about a proposal to do some extensive works at St. Mary-at-Hill in London in 1512-13. In Dives and Pauper, Dives suggests that it might be better if the money spent in high churches, in rich vestments, in curious windows, and in great bells were given to the poor. From the earliest times English forefathers gathered in their parish churches on the second day of February, when the Feast of the Purification, known as Candlemas Day, was kept, for the blessing of the candles and for the procession with lighted tapers.
