About this book
The contents list keys to families and genera alongside a statistical table and a glossary. The entry for Securidaca describes shrubs or trees with undivided leaves, distinctly irregular hermaphrodite flowers, united filaments, and anthers opening by a pore. The account of Apera describes a loose panicle and a flowering glume with a very long awn, and records two species in North-west Africa, including Algeria, used as ornamental grasses.
The entry for Bembicia records one species in Madagascar and describes an inferior, one-celled ovary, numerous stamens, petal-like sepals, and head-like inflorescences. Contrasting descriptions separate receptacles with thread- or strap-shaped appendages, sometimes partly united, from receptacles with separate glands or a ring-shaped disc and without such appendages.
