About this book
This is a 1921 volume by U. P. Hedrick, assisted by G. H. Howe, O. M. Taylor, E. H. Francis and H. B. Tukey, issued as part of a report of the New York Agricultural Experiment Station. A letter at the front transmits the manuscript of The Pears of New York as the sixth of a series of monographs on fruits.
The entries run variety by variety. An entry gives references to earlier fruit books, then the fruit's size, shape, color and flesh, for example fruit medium, oblong, dark green, with gray dots. One passage quotes descriptions of pears with German names, among them the Glass pear and the Cloister pear, grown around Wittemberg and Eisleben. The Flemish Beauty entry says it was once a leading commercial variety in eastern America but was supplanted because of blighted trees and scab fungus on the fruit.
