About this book

Julio Desnoyers returns from Buenos Aires to a Paris absorbed by the prospect of war. Waiting for a romantic meeting in the garden of the Chapelle Expiatoire, he finds children playing, benches crowded and strangers gathering around newspapers. His confidence that peace will hold sits uneasily beside the excitement spreading through the city. Published in 1916, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's novel sets private hopes against the public upheaval of the First World War.

The wartime scenes turn attention to travel, military movement and civilian flight. Don Marcelo leaves a train and continues on foot toward Villeblanche, passing families who have camped near a station while seeking a way onward. Conversations among soldiers show uncertainty about the army's retreat alongside faith in its leadership.
