About this book
The Shadow of the Cathedral is by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, translated from the Spanish by Mrs. W.A. Gillespie with a critical introduction by W.D. Howells. The introduction says there are three cathedrals which its writer thinks will remain chief of the Spanish cathedrals in the remembrance of the traveller: the Cathedral at Burgos, the Cathedral at Toledo, and the Cathedral at Seville. The introduction says the Cathedral at Toledo has been made the protagonist of the romance following.
Gabriel recognises Mariano, the bell-ringer, a man who crosses the street rattling a huge bunch of keys. On the walls are the great frescoes of Bayan y Maella, representing the works and great deeds of Saint Eulogio. Gabriel coughed much, his illness increasing from the dampness of the Cathedral.
