About this book

One chapter of The Fourth Plague is called The Red Hand Draws Blank. Sir Ralph feels the whiz of bullets as they pass him, hears the smash of the picture they struck on the opposite wall, and jumps back, white and shaking. Tillizini thrusts a girl back to cover with one motion, and a jet of flame leaps from his hand with the report of his Browning.

The text says that Carlo Gattini, a wealthy Italian living in Cromwell Square Gardens, received a curt typewritten request to place a thousand pounds in bank-notes under a certain seat in Hyde Park, and that the letter was signed by a small red hand. The text says another letter came to the Italian, asking that £2,000 in notes be placed in an envelope under the first bush in the garden. Festini tells the affrighted girl that she will be pleased to consider herself his prisoner, and says he is particularly desirous of holding her to ransom.
