About this book

Batouch arrives with a handsome grey Arab horse for Domini to try. Domini has forgiven Batouch's preoccupation with Suzanne easily enough, after Batouch had been very penitent the night before.

A woman riding into Amara seems to herself to read Androvsky with an almost merciless penetration that she cannot check. The woman thinks that contact with the crowds of Amara is one of the desert's gifts to Androvsky, although he dislikes that contact and wishes to reject it. The account says that the woman opposes his wish and that there had hitherto never been any sort of contest between them.

Robert Hichens

Robert Smythe Hichens (1864–1950) was an English novelist, journalist, and music critic who first drew notice as a satirist of the 1890s. His anonymously published novel "The Green Carnation" (1894) lampooned Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas so pointedly that it was withdrawn during Wilde's trial.
