About this book
The Gardens of the Sun is a naturalist’s journal on the mountains and in the forests and swamps of Borneo and the Sulu Archipelago, by F. W. Burbidge. The dedication is to the writer’s wife, because while the writer worked abroad she waited at home.
The preface calls the work a record of a time spent among the less well-known portions of Malaysia that may be interesting to those whom the goddess of travel has wooed in vain. The text describes the old Arab town and ferry station of Kantara, through which many caravans pass on their way to and from Cairo, with a tiny hotel and several little whitewashed houses with shady verandahs. The text says the colour and fragrance of the oleanders were delightful, and that the Arabs call this flower the “Rose of the Desert.” The text says flocks of flamingoes were seen in the distance.
