About this book
A surveying cruise aboard the Samarang supplies the framework for Frank Marryat's account of Borneo and the wider island region. Published in 1848, the narrative grew from drawings of local dress and scenery, Marryat's private journal, and the journals of fellow officers. His introduction explains why he considers accurate pictures essential to describing unfamiliar places, and criticises the changes that can creep into illustrations as sketches pass between artists and engravers.
The opening follows the ship from Portsmouth through Atlantic ports towards Java and Sarawak, mixing observations of currents with incidents aboard ship. A later passage describes tense negotiations with the sultan at Bruni, where British demands are backed by armed boats. Readers interested in maritime travel and colonial history can examine both the practical details of a surveying voyage and the assumptions behind its account of encounters ashore.
