About this book
Himalayan Journals, or Notes of a Naturalist in Bengal, the Sikkim and Nepal Himalayas, the Khasia Mountains, &c., is Joseph Dalton Hooker's travel account, here in an 1891 edition. The contents for the first chapters name the Calcutta Botanic Garden, the Rajah's gardens and menagerie, coal-beds, the ascent of Paras-nath and the hot springs of Soorujkoond.
The narrator writes in the first person about the ground he crosses. In one passage he starts up a ridge on 9 November on the road from Ilam to Wallanchoon, through forest full of horn-bills, meets an oak at 7000 feet, and finds so little water that the party camps at 8,350 feet by the only spring. Another passage describes the Kursiong bungalow, set on a narrow mountain ridge, with the valley of the Balasun river to the west and that of the Mahanuddee to the east. In a third he declines to say what answer to expect at Calcutta about proposals sent through Dorjiling.
