About this book
The Gases of the Atmosphere, The History of Their Discovery, is by William Ramsay, with portraits. An epigraph from De Morgan's A Budget of Paradoxes says that a few facts have suggested an hypothesis, which means a supposition proper to explain them. The text says Boyle, ingenious though he was, was unable to fathom the mystery of atmospheric air.
A quoted line says the Schools teach the air to be a warm and moist element, and consequently a simple and homogeneous body. The servant relates that Cavendish, on feeling his end approaching, dismissed him from the room, telling him to come back in half an hour. The text says Professors Runge and Paschen, in a paper communicated to the Royal Academy of Science of Berlin in July 1895, have adduced reasons for concluding that helium, the gas from clèveite, is a mixture.
