About this book

Long before chemistry became a systematic science, writers explained changes in metals through ideas about spirits, hidden qualities and the unity of nature. M. M. Pattison Muir examines those explanations in this illustrated history, beginning with Greek thinkers and moving through alchemical principles, apparatus and language. His concern is how people interpreted material change, and how observation and experiment came to support more precise accounts of it.

The chapters connect alchemical practice with later debates about burning, phlogiston and chemical elements. Alongside this discussion, Muir recounts the activities of Cagliostro, whose claims and deceptions show another side of alchemy's appeal. The 1913 edition includes an enlarged final chapter on the continuing search for an underlying unity in matter. Readers interested in the history of science can use the book to compare competing explanations of nature and to see how scientific questions emerge from older systems of belief.
