About this book
The Gates of India, by Thomas Hungerford Holdich, is described on its title page as a historical narrative. The discussion of geographical knowledge says Herodotus derived a great deal of the material for his geographical treatise from official Persian sources. The account of surveying says work in the highlands and coastal regions of Baluchistan and Eastern Persia had only quite recently made something like a modern gazetteer of their tribes possible.
The coastal description reports monstrous fish suddenly leaping from a flat, silent surface, such as comes with an autumn calm, and falling with a resounding slap. The account of whales describes the animals disporting themselves close inshore without frightening anyone. The coastal account says a whale occasionally becomes entangled in the cable of the Indo-Persian telegraph line, with fatal results.
