About this book

An old painting can gain a new identity through a few additions to its surface. Riccardo Nobili examines this problem in a history of art imitation and the trade in false antiques, published in 1922. Moving from Greek and Roman collecting through the Renaissance, he connects the desire to own rare objects with the opportunities that demand creates for dealers and skilled imitators.

His chapters consider sculpture, pottery, metalwork, musical instruments and books, as well as collectors, public sales and legal disputes. A passage on Italian export offices describes photographs kept before and after restoration: added scenery or heraldic details could help a modest painting pass for something more distinguished. These cases give readers interested in art history and collecting a way to think about attribution, the value attached to age, and the difference between an appealing object and a reliable account of its origins.
