About this book
The long title promises a complete guide to a gentleman's conduct in all his relations towards society, with rules for etiquette in the street, at table, in the ball room, at an evening party and on a morning call. It also covers polite correspondence, dress, conversation, manly exercises and accomplishments, and says it draws on the best French, English and American authorities. The date given is 1860, Boston.
The advice on conversation includes never interrupting a speaker, not finishing another person's story, and not showing weariness by looking at a watch or reading a letter. A passage on hunting says to keep a good seat and a good horse, to stay quiet at a meet and not to ride over the hounds. A later passage on business says a pledged word should be kept with the most rigid promptness.
