About this book

The Ghost, by William Douglas O'Connor, carries the label "A Christmas Story." The text places a quarter of some fifty streets, more or less, at the West End of Boston, commonly known as Beacon Hill, and calls it a rich and respectable quarter. Near a door with a silver plate reading "Dr. C. Renton" stands a misty figure whose sad, spectral eyes float on vacancy, and the text says that was the ghost.

Dr. Renton himself comes in sight, striding down the slope of the pavement to his own door, and a curious agitation begins on the part of the phantom. The phantom kneels by the side of someone who sleeps, gazes at his quiet face with a mournful tenderness, and seems to try to lift the sheets of an open letter with its misty hands, but vainly. The text says the ghost of Feval had gone out from earth, away to its own land, and a voice calls "Father, dear father!"
