About this book

Lois Reddle is an orphan and a quick, capable young clerk who has made her own way from a cash desk in Leeds to a London law office. When the story begins she is reading a letter on gilt-crested paper: the Countess of Moron expects her as resident secretary at a house in Chester Square. Her flatmate Lizzy Smith is cheerful and blunt, her landlord Rab Mackenzie plays the fiddle at night, and a polite young man named Michael Dorn seems to turn up wherever she goes.

Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) builds a London crime story from these ordinary details. Once Lois moves into the countess's house, there are accidents, a warning she cannot explain, and a police sergeant from the Criminal Investigation Department waiting in the shadows. Dorn has his own theories about stolen post and a plan to catch a real thief.

It is a brisk mystery of 1926, short on padding and full of period London.
