About this book

Wedding festivities and overheard confidences introduce a New York household where appearances conceal private troubles. Jinny marries John Austin amid flowers, guests and servants' gossip, while her brother Geoffrey speaks with Ruth Chester about their secret marriage and the obligations delaying its announcement. Clyde Fitch arranges the play in four acts, moving from the wedding to a honeymoon at the Vatican in Rome and then back to the Austins' New York home.

Jinny's jealousy drives a tense exchange with her husband. She reads his concern for another woman's difficulty as evidence of a romantic attachment, while he asks for trust and protects a confidence. Dialogue, interruptions and detailed stage directions let readers follow how affection turns into suspicion. The play offers a study of marriage under strain and a view of early twentieth-century theatrical storytelling.
