About this book
Representative Plays by American Dramatists, 1856-1911: The Moth and the Flame is by Clyde Fitch. A note on Clyde Fitch (1865-1909) says that Clyde Fitch brought a vivacity to the American stage that no other American playwright has thus far succeeded in emulating. The note adds that no play of his was ever wholly worthless, because of that personal equation which lent youth and spontaneity to much of his dialogue.
The note names The Stubbornness of Geraldine, The Truth and The City, and asks whether Sam Coast in Her Own Way was almost the equal of Georgiana Carley. A character named Douglas says he must, if possible, see someone to-night, and a speaker tells Howes to say to Mr. Wolton that Mr. Rhodes wants to speak to him about something very urgent. Fletcher asks whether Marion still persists in her refusal to marry him, and Marion answers yes a thousand times, now more than ever.
