A young fellow across the way slides across a plank to a girl named Lyddy and tells her he does not believe she is in any danger, adding that the firemen are on the roof. Lyddy says that Mr. Bray has been ill a long time, almost too sick to work. At noon Lyddy and 'Phemie talk over the garden project with Lucas, and Lyddy tells him to purchase a bag of potatoes for planting and a few papers of early garden seeds. A speaker says he opened the cellar door and went down with a man who wanted to go farther, to a hatch in the floor of the old doctor's workshop, and is asked whether it is a trap door.
