About this book
Irish history, learning, art and life abroad receive separate treatment in this 1914 collection of essays edited by Joseph Dunn and P.J. Lennox. Its contributors cover subjects as varied as early manuscripts, music, metalwork, folklore, theatre and the Irish language. The opening essay by Roger Casement presents resistance to outside rule as a thread connecting different periods of Irish history, with particular attention to the struggle of the Ulster clans under Hugh O'Neill and Red Hugh O'Donnell.
A later section turns to Irish associations and their growth in America. It describes the Ancient Order of Hibernians, its religious commitments, charitable spending and support for education, alongside organizations devoted to Irish independence. Readers interested in how Irish identity was presented in 1914 will find a broad range of subjects linked by national pride. The essays also supply selected bibliographies for further reading.
