About this book

The Glory That Was Greece is subtitled A Survey of Hellenic Culture and Civilisation. The text names Pericles as the leader of the democracy who, by his personal ascendancy, was almost as powerful as a monarch at Athens, in the imperial policy from about 460 onwards. The text says that at home Pericles had swept away the last vestiges of power from the Areopagus and had introduced payment of jurymen. The text says that in Greece imperialism was allied, as it is not with us, with radicalism.

Captions in the book name, among others, the Demeter of Cnidos, a sculptured column from the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Ludovisi Ares. A list of names with page numbers includes, among others, Anacreon, Anaxagoras and Anaximander.
