About this book
John's vision of a luminous cross provides the starting point for G. R. S. Mead's study of Gnostic Christian symbolism. Drawing on fragments of the Acts of John, Mead presents a translated narrative in which the disciple withdraws to the Mount of Olives and hears his teacher explain the Cross of Light. The account associates the cross with the Word, Mind, Wisdom and spiritual life, giving Mead a series of images to interpret.
The commentary considers those images on several levels: the restoration of creation, the salvation of humanity and the perfection of the individual. References to Philo and other early mystical writings connect the vision with ideas of spiritual kinship and inner illumination.
