About this book
G. R. S. Mead presents a critical study of the only existing record of the life of Apollonius of Tyana, the Philosopher-Reformer of the First Century A.D, with some account of the war of opinion concerning him. An introduction deals with the religious associations and brotherhoods of the times and the possible influence of Indian thought on Greece. The contents list names sections on India and Greece, the travels of Apollonius and the Gymnosophists of Upper Egypt, among others.
The study says that Apollonius was throughout a warm supporter of monarchical rule. The study says its point is not that there was nothing to reform, but that the wholesale accusations of depravity brought against the times will not bear impartial investigation. The account says that while at Athens Apollonius spoke strongly against the effeminacy of the Bacchanalia and the barbarities of the gladiatorial combats.
