About this book
The book is given as “THE DEATH OF BALDER FROM THE DANISH OF JOHANNES EWALD (1773) TRANSLATED BY GEORGE BORROW”. The preface to the translation says that “The works of the late poet Ewald are deservedly popular in Denmark”, and that the tragedy and the opera “The Fishermen” “are esteemed his best productions”. Thor says to Balder, “Now, Balder, hear my word, and fly from Nanna!”, and Balder answers, “From Nanna! Yes, I ought that see I plainly.”
Balder cries, “Yet will I hope! Hear, hear ye rocks! that Balder Ventures to hope!” A list of names and meanings gives “HÆL or HÆLA, the goddess of death” and “HÆLWAY, the way of the dead, or the path to Hælheim”.
