About this book
A three-foot model ship fills Harry Leslie and Walter Hammond with plans for the sea. The two school friends know every part of the Rover, made for Harry by his uncle, and long to launch it beyond the nursery. When Harry's anxious mother agrees to a family holiday at Kingshaven and invites Walter along, their excitement begins to disrupt their lessons.
Robina F. Hardy turns this seaside prospect into a children's story about friendship and generosity. A knee injury confines Harry to bed, leaving the ship within sight and the shore beyond his reach. Walter brings him accounts of his days outside, while the narrator considers whether Harry could let his friend sail the Rover alone. The small scale of their disappointment gives the story its interest: a treasured toy becomes a test of how readily a child can share another person's pleasure.
