About this book

A midsummer train brings Fred Morris from London to visit his cousins Harry and Philip Inglis at their English country home. Fred arrives proud of his schooling and doubtful that rural life can offer anything to match the city. His cousins have other ideas, asking whether he can swim, play cricket or fish, and offering to teach him. George Manville Fenn sets this children's novel among sunlit meadows, a winding river and a house covered in climbing flowers.

The holiday scenes mix cousinly friction with close observation of animals, plants and weather. On a wet morning, the boys bicker about getting out of bed and being tired, while Harry recalls their father's promise to show them insects with a microscope. The appeal lies in these small domestic exchanges and the practical curiosity surrounding them, making the book a picture of childhood recreation and country life in England.
