The Gospel of St. John by Joseph MacRory supplies critical and explanatory notes, with an introduction whose contents list external and internal evidence for the Gospel's authenticity. The contents list the Gospel's intended readers and object, its plan, the time and place of writing, its integrity and language. The commentary discusses arguments that the last chapter was written by disciples after the author's death, or added later as an authentic appendix.
The explanatory note describes the treasury as a chest or safe and explains that its name extended to the cloister containing it. The account of Jesus' death records soldiers dividing his garments and casting lots for his tunic.
