About this book
The Traditional Text of the Holy Gospels Vindicated and Established is by the late John William Burgon, Dean of Chichester, arranged, completed and edited by Edward Miller, and dated 1896. The contents list a preface, an introduction and chapters on Preliminary Grounds, Principles, The Seven Notes of Truth, The Vatican and Sinaitic Manuscripts, and the antiquity of the Traditional Text through the witness of the early Fathers and of the early Syriac versions.
In one passage the author says no fixed principles were known before 1880, notes that two late editions by Tischendorf differ from one another in 3,572 particulars, and doubts that the theory of Dr. Hort will win general acceptance. Another passage looks at the genealogy in St. Luke iii, listing names changed, misspelled, left out or added in old manuscripts, among them Codex D. A further passage compares the readings of the oldest Uncials with those of the Cursives.
