About this book
Joan Sheridan comes home to Greenacres a day early, eager to see her family after a trip abroad. Instead, she learns that the novelist Kirklan Gilmore has married a woman he met only recently. Joan's painful surprise and her mother's doubts about the match give this detective story an opening rooted in family feeling and the unsettled atmosphere of a rural New York estate.
The investigation brings a different set of pressures into the house. A woman's death places Victor Sarbella under suspicion, while newspaper man Wiggly Price considers her past and the information witnesses have held back. Constable Griggs is quick to act, but the conversation shows how much depends on personal loyalties and competing accounts. John Jay Chichester combines household tensions with an inquiry into concealed connections, making the novel a choice for readers who enjoy mysteries built around families, secrets and the interpretation of evidence.
