About this book
The Beadle Collection of Dime Novels was given to The New York Public Library by Dr. Frank P. O'Brien. The text says the gift makes it possible to place on exhibition about fourteen hundred of those rare little books and magazines which, beginning about the year 1859, were issued in America under the broad and general title of Dime Novels. The text says the exhibition shows about sixty-eight different examples of the famous original yellow back Dime Novels, which began to appear in 1860.
Number 8 is a first edition copy of Edward Ellis' celebrated Seth Jones, a story of the New York Wilderness in 1785, and more than 450,000 copies of this book had been sold in America before 1865. A catalogue list gives entries, among others, for The warrior princess; or, The pride of the Everglades, listed under Clark, Charles Dunning, and The sea king; or, The two corvettes, listed under Whittaker, Frederick. An alphabetical list of titles with authors includes, among others, Masked Mark, the mounted detective, by J. E. Badger, and Maum Guinea, and her plantation children, by Metta V. F. Victor.
