About this book
The Green Book, or Freedom Under the Snow, is a novel translated by Mrs. Waugh. The contents list chapters titled Snow Roses, Mist Shadows and Plan of War against a Woman, among others. A huntsman addresses a woman in French, the language of Russian society, saying it is unnecessary that she use firearms.
A lady cries to another lady, "How dared you shoot that stag?" Zeneida tells Betsi there is no magic in it, since the barometer hanging against the wall is pointing to continued storms. The text describes insurgents on Czar Peter's Platz, where one party stormed the castle on the other side of the frozen Neva and the other pressed on towards the gates of the Winter Palace.
