About this book

The Witch and Other Stories gathers short stories by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. The contents list The Witch, Peasant Wives, The Post, The New Villa, Dreams, The Pipe, Agafya, At Christmas Time, Gusev, The Student, In the Ravine, The Huntsman, Happiness, A Malefactor and Peasants. The title story begins with the sexton Savely Gykin lying awake in his hut beside the church while a storm rages outside.

In one passage Savely covers a sleeping postman's face with a handkerchief while his wife sits on a stool and stares at the visitor. In another, a student tells the story of Peter warming himself at a fire while Jesus is questioned, and Lukerya listens with her eyes fixed on him. A third passage describes someone lying awake at night, thinking of poverty and of how dear flour is getting.
