About this book

W. C. Tuttle's Mavericks has nineteen chapters, from The Crime to The End of the Trail, with titles that include The Hardluck Stranger, Hashknife Gets Down to Work, Ghosts and The Brand Venters. Chapter I places its scene at an old, dilapidated shack near the rim of a brushy mesa in the Southwest, near the Painted Desert, as three men ride down through the brush toward sundown.

Hashknife and Sleepy appear in several passages. In one passage Hashknife asks Nick Lee, called the sheriff at High Grade, whether he is outside his own county, while Sam Hall, Dud Evans and Scotty are close by. In another, Hashknife talks with Evans about Steve Pelliser's claim to have sold some cows, and writes a telegram to the warden of the penitentiary. In a third, Hashknife and Sleepy find the mark of a boot sole in soft ground on the road into Willow Valley and decide to wait for daylight.
