About this book

The Haskalah Movement in Russia is by Jacob S. Raisin. The text says that Warsaw was a beneficiary of Germany, having been occupied by the Prussians before it fell to the lot of the Russians. Warsaw is also named as the place where practically the first Jewish weekly journals were published in Yiddish and Polish, and where the first so-called rabbinical seminary was opened with Anton Eisenbaum as principal.

The text says it was not till about the eighteenth century that the Government began to resort to the usual methods of eradicating heresy. The text says that at a time when Jews in Spain assumed the mask of Christianity to escape persecution, Russian and Polish Christians by birth could choose, with little fear of danger, to lead the Jewish life.
