About this book

In the spring of 1574, Leyden looks prosperous, but its burgomaster knows that its defences and food supplies need urgent attention. Adrian Van der Werf surveys the city from an old tower with his daughter Jaqueline, known as the Lily of Leyden. Their conversation introduces a historical novel for young readers set during the struggle against Spanish rule in the Netherlands, where family concerns share space with the demands of public duty.

Kingston gives canals, dykes, forts and waterways a clear place in the story, making the landscape part of the danger facing the town. Young Albert offers Jaqueline his pigeons because he wants time to train as a soldier. Later, alarm bells summon the citizens, and arriving English troops provoke a debate about trust and the threat of hunger. Readers interested in siege stories will find practical questions of defence alongside Christian faith, affection and civic responsibility.
