About this book

The Helmet of Navarre has illustrations credited to André Castaigne and a dedication that reads "TO MY MOTHER". An epigraph credited to "LORD MACAULAY'S "IVRY."" reads "Press where ye see my white plume shine amidst the ranks of war, And be your oriflamme to-day the Helmet of Navarre." The contents list names chapters such as "A FLASH OF LIGHTNING", "RAPIERS AND A VOW", "THE THREE MEN IN THE WINDOW" and "TO THE BASTILLE", among others.

A first-person narrator says he sprang up on a coach-step crying "Oh, Monsieur! M. le Duc!" and that Monsieur "looked at me coldly, blankly, without a hint of recognition." A character named M. Étienne is found "sitting on the steps before the house" and asks "What has happened, Félix?" One passage says "Mayenne was smiling broadly, Monsieur frowning."
