About this book
Air Service Boys Over the Enemy's Lines, by Charles Amory Beach, is subtitled "Or, The German Spy's Secret". The contents list names chapters, among others, "Back of the Trenches", "The Winged Messenger" and "A Spy Baffled". Jack grumbles that "that's always the trouble, when you go out after rabbits and haven't any hound along to get them up and bring them within gunshot".
Jack stops short, points upward and tells Tom "there's some kind of bird going to pass over right now!" Tom throws the gun up to his shoulder and fires, the bird falls, and Jack runs forward and picks it up. Tom tells Jack "I'm to be the only pilot in the game this time", and Jack protests "You're knocking me silly with that, Tom". Jack muses "how he knew we had joined the Lafayette Escadrille", adding that "those German spies learn a lot of things".
