The Hidden Children is by Robert W. Chambers, with the year 1914 printed beside the title. The author's preface says no undue liberties with history have been attempted in this romance and that few characters in the story are purely imaginary. The preface says that from the flames of Poundridge town ablaze to the rolling smoke of Catharines-town, Romance but limps along a trail hewed out for her more dainty feet by History.
A man called Boyd says that he is a poor rifleman who may not even wear his hair clubbed and powdered. A warrior says he reads the promise of the Prince of Peace, who came to the world not bearing a sword. A letter to Euan says the writer fears he may smile on perusing the epistle, deeming it, perhaps, a trifle flowery in expression.
