About this book
The title The Maid-At-Arms is followed by the words "A Novel By Robert W. Chambers." The preface says that after a hundred years the history of a great war waged by a successful nation is commonly reviewed by that nation with retrospective complacency. A speaker who calls an old man Uncle asks whether it is true that everyone in the house is mad, and the answer is "We sho' is, suh." Asked who the others are, the reply names Miss Celia, Mars' Harry, Mars' Ruyven, Mars' Sam'l and li'l Mars' Benny.
Mount sets his cap rakishly on his head and says he would barter a month's pay for a pot o' beer. When a speaker says he does not know what is meant, Sir George answers, blandly, "I do."
