About this book
The Highland bagpipe covers the instrument’s history, literature and music, with some accounts of traditions, superstitions and anecdotes relating to the instrument and its tunes. The account describes hereditary pipers training pupils through syllables, without scales or other notations, and tunes chanted throughout the Highlands. The different teachers of piping, who were always clan pipers, used different systems, but all the systems were based on arbitrary known sounds representing particular notes.
The Pipers’ Association of Sydney sought a voice in choosing judges and obtained the appointment of its nominee. The quoted encyclopædia definition describes reed pipes sounded by a bag supplied by the performer’s lungs or a bellows.
