About this book
Gairloch in North-West Ross-shire is John H. Dixon's account of a Highland parish, with its records, traditions, inhabitants and natural history named on the title page. It is dated Edinburgh, 1886, and has a map and illustrations, with chapters by William Jolly, the Rev. John McMurtrie and Professor W. Ivison Macadam. It is dedicated to Sir Kenneth S. Mackenzie, sixth baronet and thirteenth laird of Gairloch.
A list of Gaelic place names gives meanings and spoken forms, for example Aultbea as burn of birches and Badachro as grove of the cruive. Elsewhere the text follows Rorie Mackay, a piper born in the Reay country about 1592 who became piper to John Roy Mackenzie, fourth laird of Gairloch, about 1609. Another passage mentions General George Monk passing through Kintail with his army in 1654.
