About this book
The History of Chivalry treats knighthood and its times, and the preface says a friend suggested the work as a companion to the author's history of the crusades. The contents list the qualifications for tourneying, tournament ceremonies, the arrival of knights, publication of their names and the reasons for that publication.
The account of tournament rules says a man who had violated his word or deserted his brother in arms in battle was unworthy to appear. The account qualifies those rules by saying they were not always observed, since cavaliers were often allowed to participate without naming themselves to the heralds.
