About this book
The second Roman line of defence, based on Edessa and Amida, is described as holding good in the account of the conflict. The account of war attributes the harm to the empire less to lost fortresses or ravaged territory than to a long and fruitless drain of taxation. The Persians are described as hoping to win by exhausting the empire's resources and as determined to prolong the conflict.
Lewis stands alone at his tent door after the counts depart, with his wife beside him and his son Charles clinging to his hand. The emperor's sons ride to Lewis's empty camp, salute their father with feigned respect and set a guard over his tent.
