About this book
The History of Chivalry is by G. P. R. James. The preface says that the author wished to write upon Chivalry and the Crusades, fancying that in the hypotheses of many other authors the author had discovered various errors and misstatements. The preface also speaks of the difficulty of compressing very extensive matter into an extremely limited space.
The book says that in all the old romances, fabliaux, sirventes, ballads, not one instance is to be found in which a squire becomes a knight, without some reference to his religious faith. The author says that he means the Spirit of Chivalry, which was more a spirit than an institution. The text says that the knights of the Temple were only suffered for some centuries, feared, hated, avoided, and at last were crushed. A chapter heading lists the Causes and Character of the Second Crusade.
