About this book
The account of Comenius describes an approach to language learning in which use and reading replace the abuse of rules, while rules support practical use. The discussion of practical exercises attributes particular importance to learning through activity, using the example of an apprentice who observes a master and handles tools. The account calls for gradual habituation to action, productive work and personal effort instead of mechanically repeating a lesson learned by heart.
The discussion of practical and special instruction supports creating colleges for those purposes, while opposing the combination of literary studies and industrial arts under one roof. The account of the Convention says that its attention during the first years of its existence was given only to primary schools. The account of Charlemagne describes his purpose of spreading instruction, his pursuit of learning and his practice in writing.
