About this book
Living Fountains or Broken Cisterns, subtitled An Educational Problem for Protestants, is a book by E. A. Sutherland. The book carries the words "My people have committed two evils; they have forsaken Me the fountain of living waters" with the reference Jer. 2:13. The preface says there are few books which treat of the history of education, and fewer which attempt to show the part that the educational work has ever borne in the upbuilding of nations. The preface says that religion is inseparably connected with, and upheld by, the system of education maintained by its advocates, and that many historians have recognized this in a casual way.
The text quotes Luther as saying that no one thinks that God has earnestly willed and commanded that children be brought up to his praise and work. The text describes the man Adam standing forth, strong and perfect, while a song of praise ascended to the Creator.
