About this book
The History of Silk, Cotton, Linen, Wool, and Other Fibrous Substances contains a section headed History of the Silk Manufacture Continued to the Fourth Century. An outline names spinning, dyeing, and weaving as arts in which a high degree of excellence was attained, lists testimony from Latin poets of the Augustan age, and includes references to silk by authors in the first, second, and third centuries.
Claudian’s description of a toga worn by Honorius attributes its colour, identified as Tyrian purple, to the Phœnicians. Aristotle calls rams leaders of the sheep and says that shepherds provided a leader for each flock, responding to the shepherd’s call by name.
